21 September 1964, the “Malta Independence Act 1964″ lead to the formation of an independent constitutional monarchy, with Elizabeth II as Queen of Malta and Head of State.
On 1 April 1979 the last British forces left the island after the end of the economic pact to stabilise the Maltese economy. This is celebrated as Freedom Day (Jum Il-Ħelsien) on 31 March.
Malta joined the European Union in 2004, and the EuroZone in 2008.
